Hamas confirms leader Yahya Sinwar was killed in combat with Israeli forces in Gaza, says he died defending Palestine until the last moments of his life.

International leaders heralded the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar as an opportunity to begin ceasefire negotiations — an idea Hezbollah, Israel and Hamas have rebuffed.

Israeli captives held in Gaza will not return until war on Gaza stops and Israeli forces withdraw from the besieged and bombarded territory, senior Hamas official Khalil Hayya says.

Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu says “this is not the end of the war in Gaza” despite the killing of Sinwar.

Lebanese group Hezbollah says it is entering a “new phase” in its fight against invading Israeli troops, adding that it has introduced new weapons over the past days.

In Gaza, at least 42,500 people have been killed and 99,546 wounded in Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023. At least 1,139 people were killed in Hamas’s attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, and more than 200 were taken captive.

Following the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza on Thursday, US presidential candidate Kamala Harris said it was time for the “day after to begin” in the Middle East.

The day after his death, however, Israel, Hamas and Hezbollah gave little indication any immediate fighting would stop, with both sides of the conflict instead buckling down on their conflicting demands.

After the Israeli military confirmed it had killed Sinwar, international leaders — led by US President Joe Biden — said that his death would allow ceasefire negotiations to move forward.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Sinwar, who was widely considered to be the primary architect behind the 7 October terrorist attacks, was a big obstacle in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

“On multiple occasions over the past months, Sinwar rebuffed efforts by the United States and its partners to bring this war to a close through an agreement that would return the hostages to their families and alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people,” Blinken said in a statement Thursday.

So far, Israel has not given any indication it would be willing to start negotiations with Hamas or its Iran-backed ally, Hezbollah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the families of hostages Thursday, saying that it was an “important moment” to bring the hostages home, adding that anyone who assisted with the return of hostages would be allowed to leave Gaza.

Still, the leader failed to say how Israel would fulfil Hamas’ key demand that Israel withdraw completely from the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu also said after Sinwar’s death was confirmed that the war was not over, with “the task before us not yet complete”.

The Israeli military called up an additional reserve brigade in northern Israel on Thursday, a signal that it is prepared to continue its ground incursion into southern Lebanon whilst it simultaneously pummels Beirut’s suburbs.

Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran sabre-rattle

Senior Hamas official Khalil Al Hayya, who served as the chief negotiator for Hamas in talks for a ceasefire, also gave little hope that the group would be willing to compromise on their ceasefire conditions.

In a televised address, Al Hayya reiterated the group’s core demands that Israel withdraw from the Gaza strip and Palestinian prisoners in Israel be released.

Hezbollah, whose targets Israel is hitting in Lebanon, said that Sinwar’s death meant “the transition to a new and escalating phase in the confrontation with Israel.”

On Friday, the group issued a statement saying their fighters have used new types of precision-guided missiles and explosive drones against Israel in recent days, including one that hit a military training camp in Israel last Sunday, killing four people.

They added that the group were preparing in advance to battle Israeli troops in southern Lebanon and announced several missile and artillery attacks on Israeli forces on the border between the countries overnight.

Iran, who hit Israel in an attack two weeks ago, said that Sinwar would be remembered as an “inspiration”.

Israel has threatened to retaliate to Iran’s attack, compromising that it would not hit military or nuclear targets in the country after Biden warned Netanyahu that the US would not support such attacks.

Durant son incarcération pendant plus de vingt ans dans les prisons israéliennes, l’actuel chef du Hamas à Gaza a compris la psyché israélienne et s’en est inspiré pour préparer les attaques du 7 octobre, notamment la prise en otage d’un grand nombre de civils et de militaires, explique “The Wall Street Journal”, qui brosse le portrait d’un homme “sans merci”.

Quand le chef du Hamas [à Gaza], Yahya Sinwar, était incarcéré en Israël il y a plus de dix ans, il avait expliqué à un responsable israélien une théorie qui donne un tout autre éclairage à la guerre actuelle à Gaza. Pour Sinwar, ce qui fait la force et la fierté d’Israël – le fait que la plupart des Israéliens fassent un très long service militaire et que les soldats jouissent d’un statut privilégié dans la société – était une faiblesse à exploiter, raconte Yuval Bitton, qui a passé du temps avec lui en tant qu’ancien directeur de la division du renseignement du Service pénitentiaire israélien.

Cette idée a montré toute sa pertinence en 2011, quand Sinwar s’est retrouvé libre à la suite de l’échange de 1 027 prisonniers palestiniens contre un seul soldat israélien. Aujourd’hui, Sinwar retient en otage 138 Israéliens [leur nombre s’élevait à plus de 240 avant la libération de 105 autres otages durant une semaine de trêve, à la fin de novembre], y compris des soldats. Et le chef du Hamas compte bien obtenir le maximum en échange, comme la libération de milliers de prisonniers palestiniens et la mise en place d’un cessez-le-feu permanent.

Pour cela, il se fie à son jugement sur la société israélienne, lui qui a passé vingt ans à la décortiquer en prison, en apprenant l’hébreu et en regardant les infos locales pour mieux rentrer dans la psyché israélienne. Mais d’abord, le Hamas doit survivre à la puissante et meurtrière contre-attaque israélienne. Et Sinwar pourrait bien devenir celui qui a précipité la fin de ce groupe, classé comme terroriste par les États-Unis, et y trouver la mort.

Guerre psychologique

Depuis qu’il est devenu le chef du Hamas à Gaza, en 2017, la stratégie de Sinwar a été de constamment rappeler aux Israéliens qu’ils étaient en conflit avec les Palestiniens. Il alternait ainsi les moments de dialogue constructif avec Israël et le recours à la violence à des fins politiques. Il est connu pour sa traque impitoyable des Palestiniens soupçonnés de collaborer avec Israël, et sa manière de mener les négociations pour libérer les otages a été perçue par certains Israéliens comme une véritable guerre psychologique.

Lors des récentes négociations concernant les otages, il a coupé les communications pendant plusieurs jours pour faire pression sur Israël et faire accepter une trêve qui permettrait au Hamas d’avoir le temps de regrouper ses hommes, selon les médiateurs égyptiens. Quand les premiers otages ont été relâchés, ils ont été libérés au compte-gouttes plutôt qu’en une seule fois, et ce afin de déstabiliser au quotidien la société israélienne, plongée dans l’angoisse.

Sinwar, la petite soixantaine, a depuis déclaré aux négociateurs égyptiens que la guerre ne serait pas finie de sitôt, à cause de la violence des bombardements, ce qui laisse entendre qu’il compte obtenir le maximum d’Israël en échange des derniers otages. L’une des raisons des attaques du 7 octobre était de capturer le plus de soldats possible, pour les échanger contre des prisonniers palestiniens.

Quand Sinwar a été libéré, lors de l’échange de 2011, il pensait que le Hamas aurait dû réclamer davantage et obtenir d’Israël la libération de Palestiniens responsables d’attentats qui avaient tué des Israéliens et qui purgeaient des peines à perpétuité.

“Une affaire personnelle”

À sa libération, Sinwar a déclaré qu’il ferait tout pour faire libérer ceux qui restaient emprisonnés. “Il en fait une affaire personnelle, assure Mkhaimer Abusada, un Palestinien qui enseignait les sciences politiques à l’université Al-Azhar, à Gaza, avant la guerre. Il était gêné de quitter la prison en 2011 et de devoir abandonner certains de ses camarades.”
